Abigail Lewis
Sociology and Comparative Literature Major
I am Abigail Lewis, a senior studying Sociology and Comparative Literature with a certificate in International Studies at UMass Amherst. On campus, I work in the Reimagining Justice Lab with Professor Joshua Kaiser, where I am also involved with the University Programming Council, where I plan large scale events for the entire campus as an event coordinator, and the Student Alumni Association, where I work as a student ambassador, bridging the gap between guests to campus and the student body at various UMass events.
During my time at UMass, I have studied abroad 3 times. In the summer after my freshman year, I participated in the Oxford Summer Seminar, where I studied international law and British fiction. The experience reaffirmed my interests in both law and literature (and my love of gothic architecture). During the winter break of my sophomore year, I was a member of the inaugural UMass International Scholars Cyprus Program, where I spent a month learning about cross cultural communication and Cypriot history and culture. Yassas! Finally, in the spring of my junior year, I embarked on an immersive four month program in Sevilla, Spain. I improved my Spanish, learned to dance Sevillano and explored one of my new favorite places.
After graduation, I plan to take a gap year doing some sort of work in the legal field while I apply to law school. My career goals lie in the public sector, where I want to work in some sort of advocacy law. Some of my more specific interests include international human rights and disability advocacy, but I am unsure exactly what field I want to work in within beyond broad public interest.
