It’s a season packed with celebration, community, and connection, and this year we'll also be celebrating 25 years of the Honors College at UMass Amherst!

Here are the events hosted by the Honors College we are excited for during the upcoming Fall semester:

Latin Rhythms Social -  Friday, September 27, 2024

In its fourth edition, the Latin Rhythms Social has become a beloved tradition commemorating Latinx Heritage Month at the Honors College. Join your Honors community from 3 to 5 p.m. on the CHCRC Concourse for an afternoon of music, dance, crafts and food, celebrating the beauty and diversity of Latin America! Various foods and candies from different Latin American countries will be offered. For those looking to pick up some dance moves, a dance instructor will be teaching students various Latin rhythms. Dean Mari Castañeda may even make a special appearance and showcase her dancing skills! So come, unwind and dance!

Commonwealth Honors College Plenary Lecture: Dr. Timothy Eatman - Tuesday, October 08, 2024

Timothy K. Eatman, dean of the Honors Living-Learning Community at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ, will be the keynote speaker at our annual Plenary Lecture starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Student Union Ballroom. This annual tradition has become one of the most cherished here at the Honors College. Students are encouraged to come join in planting daffodil bulbs across the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community (CHCRC) and to see them emerge in the spring. These bulbs start to spring in time for our Spring Daffodil Lecture! With these daffodils we honor Priscilla Clarkson, an environmental activist and former dean of  Commonwealth Honors College who was crucial in the building of the CHCRC we know today. This event symbolizes our commitment to sustainability and the environment as we beautify the shared space we all partake in. Come join us in a time of community, remembrance and appreciation for this world we have been given and share with others. Snacks and free CHC gifts will be provided to all who participate!

Pizza and Prof - Thursday, November 14, 2024

Join our esteemed professors for a night of conversation, community and pizza, starting at 4 p.m. in the Honors Hub! This is an excellent opportunity for students to engage and connect with professors in an informal setting. Students with an interest in research, looking for opportunities to work with professors, students beginning their thesis journeys, or any students with an interest in some of the work done by these professors are encouraged to come and connect!

Join the Honors community on the last day of classes for a relaxing cup of hot cocoa as finals season and winter is starting! Take some time to enjoy winter’s most comforting cup of joy and treat yourself to our wide variety of hot cocoa flavors and toppings. Students are encouraged to bring their own mugs to help reduce waste as we strive towards a more sustainable Honors College. Come appreciate the last few days of the semester with a soothing cup of hot cocoa!

We look forward to seeing you at these events this semester!
