Growing up in a traditional Indian household, the path to success seemed predestined —medicine or dentistry. My vision of the future was confined within these boundaries, restricting exploration of my true passions and potential.

My sophomore year became a turning point — a time of exploration and self-discovery. Venturing beyond the confines of my major opened doors to a world I hadn't dared to explore before. It was then that the world of business spoke to me.

Along with a background in medicine, my family also has a legacy of entrepreneurial ventures, ranging from liquor stores to pharmacies. This exposure nurtured my curiosity in the realm of business. Enrolling in economics courses was my gateway to a broader vision, one that went beyond my existing knowledge. Surprisingly, these classes resonated deeply, opening my eyes to the intricate dynamics of economies and markets. Interacting with peers from diverse backgrounds and listening to their narratives illuminated the vast spectrum of opportunities awaiting exploration.

Yet, when I made the decision to pivot my studies to economics, it was met with disheartenment from my parents. Their disappointment echoed their concerns about my capabilities in this new field. This moment became a catalyst, igniting a fire within me to break cultural barriers. I resolved to show not just them, but also the world, that my capabilities were made for this breakthrough.

Switching my major to economics marked the inception of a journey toward embracing change and innovation.

But, I knew there was more I could do and learn beyond the scopes of economics. I decided to delve into the world of technology. I wanted to be able to connect two growing realms into one, and see what positive attributes I could create.

I decided to add an IT minor because the two biggest growing industries are technology and business, and I wanted to be aware and competent in both fields.

Theory without application felt incomplete. Seeking real-world application, I secured internships and side hustles. I was able to find a remote position as an intern content creator at New 2 You Marketing, where I was able to unravel business techniques, prompting me to add a business minor. Subsequently, I was able to land an  internship the summer after my sophomore year at Cambridge Savings Bank as an IT analyst.

Fast forward to senior year, roles as a marketing assistant and communications assistant, an Honors thesis fusing economics, IT, and business fundamentals, and an enriching internship at Fidelity Investments as a compliance intern paint the canvas of my academic journey. These experiences shaped my understanding and passion for my future.

My journey exemplifies the power of resilience and self-belief in steering one's destiny. It highlights the importance of painting your own future, and breaking barriers when necessary.

Today, I stand on the cusp of a new chapter, embracing change and innovation as I prepare to step into the role of a Compliance Analyst at Fidelity Investments after I graduate.

Choosing my major and minors wasn't just a decision; it was a declaration—an affirmation that breaking barriers is possible, and the fusion of passion and education can carve a unique, impactful path.
