Every year, Western Massachusetts hosts fantastic events that locals eagerly anticipate. Now that you're part of the UMass community, it's essential to become acquainted with all the happenings in the area. Throughout the year, you'll find events that celebrate and bring together the local community.
Amherst Block Party
This year, on September 19th, the city of Amherst will come alive with the 11th Annual Block Party, a much-anticipated event that transforms North Pleasant Street into a bustling hub of activity. From 5 to 9 p.m., both sides of the street will be lined with an array of entertainment, local vendors, and popular restaurants, offering something for everyone to enjoy.
This event is more than just an evening out — it's an invitation for community members and students to immerse themselves in the heart of Amherst, explore its unique shops and eateries, and connect with one another.
The Big E
Keeping with the theme of fairs, it is only right to talk about New England’s biggest and best fair: The Big E! This fair aims to highlight each New England state, with each state having its own building, serving as a hub for visitors to explore and experience the unique aspects of each state, including its tourism, products, food, history, and culture. Inside these buildings, attendees will discover agricultural products, culinary specialties, historical exhibits, and interactive displays that showcase the distinct characteristics of each New England state. The fair is also of course known for its fantastic food, which is a reason in itself to visit. Beyond the delicious food and lively entertainment, the Big E also highlights the agricultural heritage of the region, celebrating all aspects of agriculture, from livestock shows to educational farming exhibits. At the Big E, you'll find no shortage of sights to see.
Northampton Pride Parade
Hosted by Hampshire Pride, this parade was revamped in 2024 and aims to bring queer celebration to the heart of Northampton each May. This past year, the event featured 100 local and LGBTQ+ friendly vendors, a stage dedicated to drag, and a much larger parade than in previous years. If you are looking to attend a local pride parade in 2025 and in the years to come, keep an eye on Hampshire Pride.
Green River Festival
Around the bend in Greenfield, MA, is the fantastic Green River Festival, the area’s famed music festival held at the end of June. Over three days, musicians of all genres take the stage and delight the crowds with their music. Over the years, many great musical groups have performed at the festival, such as Lake Street Dive, Father John Misty, Houndmouth, Sierra Ferrell, and hundreds of others. The event is held at the Franklin Country Fairgrounds and you can either purchase a 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day pass. Since it is about an hour from campus, you can also purchase a parking pass or a camping add-on. These sell out fast, so be sure to purchase them early on if you are interested!
3 County Fair
Another great annual event in Northampton is the 3 County Fair, which has been held for 207 years! Over the years, the fair has evolved, but it continues to offer a variety of experiences for visitors. You can find carnival games, livestock demonstrations, crafts, demolition derbies, music, fair food, and much more here. If you are in the area on Labor Day weekend, consider heading to Northampton for a classic fair experience.
We hope you partake in some of the wonderful events that Western Mass has to offer and be sure to explore other events as well!
