Advising and Course Registration Checklist
Advising appointments for first year and transfer students will open on June 10 and will run until July 19.
To schedule your Advising appointment:
- Complete the Guide to the U.
- The Guide to the U is an online platform that introduces you to the UMass community and the available resources to support you. All students are required to complete the Guide to the U in order to attend Ready for the U and schedule an advising appointment!
- Be on the lookout for an invite email to sign up for your two advising appointments. You may schedule your appointments through that email, or via the links below.
- Pre-advising appointment with an NSOT Peer Advisors (Meet them here!)
- Advising appointment
Before your advising session, please complete the following:
- Complete both the Math Placement and Writing Placement Tests.
- Send in any AP scores though College Board.
- Complete the FERPA form if you wish to have a parent in the advising session.
- Please ensure you have access to a computer (NOT a phone or tablet) for your appointment and that you have:
- downloaded and updated Zoom, and
- have the ability to share your screen
- Begin to get familiar with:
- Learning how to use Spire to find and enroll into courses.
- Using the Schedule Builder tool to help you build the best class schedule based on your needs.
- General Education Courses – Fall 2024. The General Education Program provides students with experiences, knowledge, and skills necessary to become well-educated, successful, and valuable contributors to our ever-evolving global community. The General Education Course Planning Guide can help.
Remember to check your email to sign up for your advising appointment! Emails from the "College of Education" go out on each Monday the week during the New Student Orientation Advising Period.

- Look at the list of General Education Courses – Fall 2024. The General Education Program provides students with experiences, knowledge, and skills necessary to become well-educated, successful, and valuable contributors to our ever-evolving global community. - Connect your phone, tablet and computer to the Campus wireless network.
