Advising and Course Registration Checklist

Advising appointments for first year and transfer students will open on June 9 and will run until July 25.  Be on the lookout for an invite email to sign up for that appointment along with a pre-advising appointment with a current College of Education Student. Emails from the College of Education go out each Monday during the New Student Orientation Advising Period.

Advising

To schedule your advising appointment:

  • First, complete the Guide to the U.
    • The Guide to the U is an online platform that introduces you to the UMass community and the available resources to support you. All students are required to complete the Guide to the U in order to attend Ready for the U and schedule an advising appointment!
  • Then, be on the lookout for an invite email to sign up for your two advising appointments. You may schedule your appointments through that email, or via the links below.
    • Pre-advising appointment with a NSOT Peer Advisor

Course Registration Checklist

Before your advising session, please be sure to:

  • Complete both the Math Placement and Writing Placement Tests.
  • Send in AP scores though College Board, if applicable.
  • Complete the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) form if you wish to have a parent/guardian in the advising session.
  • Have access to a computer (NOT a phone or tablet) for your appointment and that you have downloaded and updated Zoom, and have the ability to share your screen.
  • Start getting familiar with important resources.
    • Learn how to use Spire to find and enroll into courses.
    • Use the Schedule Builder tool to help you build the best class schedule based on your needs.
    • Look at the list of General Education Courses. The General Education Program provides students with experiences, knowledge, and skills necessary to become well-educated, successful, and valuable contributors to our ever-evolving global community. The General Education Course Planning Guide can help.
    • Connect your phone, tablet and computer to the Campus wireless network.

Remember to check your email to sign up for your advising appointment!
