With a heavy heart the College of Education celebrates the life of Dwight W. Allen, Ed.D., former dean (1968-1975), who passed away on October 16, 2021. He was 90.
Allen was surrounded by family when he passed, according to his son, Doug Allen. A small invitation-only family funeral is being arranged, with plans to host a more inclusive memorial at a later date.
"We miss him greatly, but know that he is entering a new, exciting and wonderful arena of existence and service to others," the Allen family wrote in a short statement. "We are assured that he remains close and that we will be able to tap into his love, energy and support as we move forward."
In addition to serving as dean of the College of Education for seven years, Allen also taught as a professor from 1962-1978. He established himself as an internationally recognized scholar and figure in the field of education throughout his career. Allen mentored countless students, advocated for educational reform, consulted university leadership at institutions across the world, and published several scholarly books. The Dwight W. Allen Professorship of Educational Policy and Reform was created in his honor.
A tribute plaque and portrait of Allen can also be viewed in the lobby of Furcolo Hall (Pleasant Street entrance).
