Dean's Response to Recent Events in Afghanistan

September 25, 2021 Community

Content

Cindy

To the College of Education Community,

The recent devastating events unfolding in Afghanistan have touched our community deeply. Words cannot adequately capture the turmoil that fills our screens and news feeds day after day. We continue to hold in our hearts the students, alumni, faculty, and staff directly impacted by these events. We remain hopeful that the voices of the Afghan people are valued during this uncertain moment in the history of their country.

As a College of Education, our values in practice influence the ways we teach our students, conduct our research, serve our communities, and work toward a future that is more equitable and just for all. Afghanistan has taught us that our work is more important now than ever. For 65 years, the college has steadfastly upheld a commitment to balancing the scales, speaking truth to power, and humanizing those who all too often are marginalized and forgotten. We continue this work to this day, and hold a responsibility to ensure the principles of democracy and social justice remain at the forefront of minds around the world.

There are many resources available online that detail how you can get involved with support efforts. Charitable giving is one option to directly support Afghan refugees, especially women and children. Writing to your state senators and Congress representatives can facilitate the process of widening the criteria for visas to include students, scholars, alumni, and their families.

I encourage you to rely on your support networks within the college and at home during this time.

Sincerely,

Cindy Gerstl-Pepin, Ph.D.
Dean, College of Education
