The College of Education’s Dean Gregory J. Kelly was recently quoted in a WBUR article on the recent lawsuit brought against the Department of Education by several attorney generals, including Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell.

The lawsuit was filed over grant funding cuts for K-12 teacher preparation programs, including a $2.3 million UMass Amherst grant used to fund the training of teaching assistants who want to become licensed early childhood educators.
Dean Kelly is featured in the article expressing his disappointment with the cancellation of the preparation program. His research, such as his papers “A Model for Equity-Oriented PreK-12 Engineering” and “Socially Engaged Engineering: A Framework for K-8 Education,” focus on increasing equity in education.
The program trained paraprofessionals, particularly those of color, in teaching practices to increase diversity in Massachusetts educators and uplifted those who want to pursue education but do not have a bachelor’s degree.
