Edmund Gordon

Join Distinguished University Professor Stephen Sireci, special guests, and members of the College of Education community in celebrating the legendary Edmund Gordon and the release of his Gordon Handbook Series on Assessment in the Service of Learning, open-published by UMass Amherst Libraries and featuring Distinguished University Professor Stephen Sireci as one of the editors.

We are especially proud to welcome Gordon, psychologist, professor of education, luminary of his field and centenarian, who is an original architect of the federal Head Start program and considered to be one of the most significant educational researchers of all time. Gordon is a former student and mentee of W.E.B. DuBois and was instrumental in helping UMass Amherst secure the DuBois homestead in Great Barrington, Mass. Over his career, he has published over 200 articles and 25 books.

These three handbooks—Volume I: Foundations for Assessment in the Service of Learning, Volume II: Reconceptualizing Assessment to Improve Learning, and Volume III: Examples of Assessment in the Service of Learning—are handbooks intended for a broad audience, from test developers, assessment researchers, psychometricians, and learning scientists to educators, policy makers, and designers. These indispensible resources will guide policymakers and PreK-12 leaders in shaping the future of assessment, while offering developers and researchers a blueprint for designing and scaling the next generation of assessments for learning.

As Gordon says in his series introduction to the handbooks:

"Pedagogical sciences and practice have long utilized educational assessment and measurement too narrowly. While we have leveraged the capacity of these technologies and approaches to monitor progress, take stock, measure readiness, and hold accountable, we have neglected their capacity to facilitate the cultivation of ability; to transform interests and engagement into developed ability ... Educational assessment as an essential component of pedagogy, in the service of learning, can inform and improve human learning and development."

The College of Education is thrilled to welcome Edmund Gordon and celebrate this latest series of books, as well as his illustrious and impactful career.
