Student Emergency Fund
The College of Education Emergency Fund is only available to both current graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Education who are experiencing unanticipated circumstances that jeopardize their ability to successfully continue in their program.
Eligible students must be a current student studying in the College of Education who are enrolled in the semester funds are requested and be in good academic standing. Students may submit one application per academic year, with additional consideration given under extenuating circumstances.
Eligible Expenses

Access to remote learning technology (laptops, internet, etc.);

Travel expense – national or international - due to death or illness of an immediate family member or other unforeseen circumstances;

Rent, utilities, food or other monthly household expenses;

Medical, dental or mental health emergency expenses not covered by insurance;

Replacement costs of essential personal belongings in the event of fire, theft or natural disaster not covered by insurance;

Dependent-related expenses (food, child care, other).
Ineligible Expenses
- Tuition, fees, books, and other standard expenses associated with attending the University of Massachusetts;
- Costs of optional programming, conferences, entertainment, recreation, or non-essential travel.
How to Request Emergency Funds
To request funding, please complete an Emergency Fund application, providing as much detail as you are comfortable providing regarding your personal situation, and email to the Emergency Fund Review Committee at EDUC-emergencyfund [at] umass [dot] edu (EDUC-emergencyfund[at]umass[dot]edu).
Application Review
The Student Emergency Fund Committee, consisting of the Graduate Program Director and two members from the college community, will review each request, supporting documentation, current assistantship information and the Bursar account balance. Students are notified of a funding decision within three business days of the application submission.
Awards
Emergency Funds will be provided to the student’s Bursar account in the form of a non-working fellowship or scholarship, and typically range from $100 to $1,000 dependent upon individual need and availability of funds. Requests for support exceeding $1,000 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
