Student Scholarships
The College of Education offers a scholarship program for current and new students within the college. Scholarships are offered to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students who are preparing to work in the education profession (i.e., P12 schools or higher education.) See below the descriptions of available scholarships. The scholarship application should be completed online using academic works.
How to apply:
- Go to the Academic Works webpage and sign in with your UMass Net ID and password.
- Complete both the General and College of Education Applications. Once you do this, you’ll see all the scholarships you qualify for.
- Click on a scholarship link and upload supplementary documents (personal statement, resumes, transcripts, additional materials depending on award)
- Submit your application and see your dashboard, which shows you the status of any pending and submitted applications.

Available Scholarships
Dr. Maurianne Adams Endowed Social Justice Education Scholarship Fund
To provide scholarship support to doctoral students in the Social Justice Education Program who have completed their comprehensive examinations. The fund may be used for travel or other expenses to complete research for doctoral proposals or towards expenses of completing their doctoral dissertations
Emily Belval Scholarship
Provide financial support to students in the School Psychology Department who demonstrates financial need.
Mathew Briggs Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund will be to support students enrolled in the Social Justice Education Program or the Language, Literacy and Culture Program (or their successor programs). Preference will be given to socioeconomically disadvantaged students, who are disproportionately impacted by the lack of resources to continue their educational pursuits.
Janice Camby Endowed Scholarship
Provides support to any student accepted or enrolled in a teacher preparation program who demonstrates financial need and is from an under-represented group. A current FAFSA must be filed with the UMass Financial Aid Office.
Grace Norton Carney Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is for any student in the P-12 teacher preparation program at the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Applicants must be a native or legal resident of Massachusetts within the last 10 years. Preference is given to students who hold an undergraduate degree from UMass Amherst, Framingham or Bridgewater State University and have a GPA of 3.3 or better. Preference will also be given to a graduate of Waltham (MA) High School. To be eligible, a student may not have a judicial record with the University, must participate in extracurricular activities and be active in community service in the Amherst area or home community.
Richard J. Clark Memorial Scholarship for Teacher Education
Provides financial support to any student in the Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies Department who has a GPA of 3.3 or better. They must also have experience with community service, internships and employment that demonstrates a commitment to excellence and equity. A current FAFSA must be filed with the UMass Financial Aid Office.
Early Childhood Education Graduate Fund
Provides funding for graduate students in a doctoral program studying early childhood, children or families. Funds may be used to support research activities and other educational/professional expenses not covered by other support, or for emergent need of these students at the discretion of the Dean.
Adams Crosson Scholarship
Established to provide scholarship assistance each year to one or more doctoral students studying higher education and fully matriculated on the Amherst campus as well as to increase and enhance the overall diversity of the student body of the University of Massachusetts and provide access for those students who have been historically underrepresented for race, ethnicity, gender, and economic reasons in higher education.
Dr. Doren D. Fredrickson Graduate Student Scholarship
Provides scholarships to graduate applicants to the School Counselor Education or School Psychology programs. Preference is given to applicants with counseling, teaching, or other appropriate work experience, or to applicants who have served in the military.
Kayla R. Gordon Beacon of Light Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund will be to support EdS or PhD students enrolled in the School Psychology Program in the College of Education who are in a practicum. Preference will be given to applicants who show through their coursework or extra-curricular activities, a dedication to advocate on behalf of students and families in crisis.
Marylin C. Haley College of Education Scholarship
Provides funding for any eligible graduate student based on financial need. Preference will be given to students in a reading and writing, secondary, early childhood and elementary or special education teacher preparation program. A current FAFSA must be filed with the UMass Financial Aid Office.
Marjorie R. Harrison International Impact Fund
The purpose of the Fund will be to provide support for graduate students in any College of Education doctoral program whose program of study will be enriched by international research or fieldwork.
Meline Kasparian Endowed Fund
Provides support to any student in a teacher preparation program who has exhibited a desire to become a public school teacher.
Betty Katz Memorial Scholarship in Early Childhood Education
Provides support to an undergraduate junior admitted to the Early Childhood Education major, with renewal of the award* in the recipient’s senior year if the selection/award criteria continue to be met. Recipients will be chosen based on academic merit as determined by a GPA of 3.0 or higher, financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office and demonstrated passion for the field of early childhood education.
Joseph W. Keilty Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship provides support to full-time graduate students with preference given to doctoral students. Students with a demonstrated financial need, high academic performance and exceptional promise are encouraged to apply. A current FAFSA must be filed with the UMass Financial Aid Office.
Jerome and Florence McCormick Doctoral Award
The Jerome and Florence McCormick Doctoral Award will provide support to doctoral students in their dissertation-writing year. Students from any doctoral program in the College of Education are eligible for the scholarship, with selection based on merit.
Anne Farmer Momot Scholarship
Provides support to a student majoring in Special Education. Particular consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate warmth, patience and dedicated support for students.
Nieto/Rudman Endowed Scholarship
Provides financial support to any student in the Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies Department. Preference will be given to doctoral students in the Language, Literacy and Culture concentration. Applicants must be in good academic standing and have a GPA of 3.3 or better.
Frances Parker Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund will be to support students in the College of Education who are enrolled in the Special Education Program (or its successor program) and demonstrate financial need as determined by UMass Amherst.
B&M Pressley Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarship support to graduate students in the College of Education, with a preference for those in the counseling program. Preference will also be given to those with high GPAs.
Harbert/Strachan Family Endowed Scholarship Fund
Provide scholarship support to undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Education who demonstrate financial need as determined by the office of Financial Aid.
Dr. Florence Sullivan Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of the fund will be to provide scholarship support to doctoral students in the College of Education with interests in learning sciences, computing education or technology/media education as demonstrated by their coursework, research, work experience or volunteer activities. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated experience in or commitment to working with LGBTQIA+ organizations or to promoting the needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals; first generation college students; students who are registered with the UMass Amherst Office of Disability Services; or student who come from an educations or cultural or geographic background that is underrepresented in the US or at the College of Education; or students who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to diversity meaning efforts in the US to reduce social, educational, or economic disparities based on race, ethnicity, or gender or to improve race relations in the US) in the academic, professional, or civic realm through their work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of as student or community organization or have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances.
Helen Eaton Timson Scholarship
Provides scholarship support to any deserving student in a College of Education program.
Ruth Totman Scholarship
Provides scholarship to a Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies student in a teacher preparation program. Preference will be given to a female student.
C. Lynn Vendien Endowed Scholarship Endowment Fund
Provides support to graduate students who are citizens of foreign countries. Preference will be given to students in the Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies.
C. Lynn Vendien Professional Prize Award Endowment Fund
This prize will be awarded to a doctoral student. Preference will be given to students in the Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies.
Mary Margaret Whittaker-Webster Memorial Endowment Fund
Provides support to graduate students in the School Psychology program for student expenses and programs for which other sources of funding are not available. Examples include research travel, national education or psychology meetings, expendable items such as software or journals, or emergency situations such as student expenses for books, supplies, or fees.
