UTS +1 Pathway Description
The 4+1 MEd. University to Schools (UTS) is a 9-10 month initial licensure program, which prepares students to teach middle and high school students in a variety of settings in either mathematics, history, science (biology, physics, chemistry, general science) and English. The program is rigorous from start to finish and allows students to carry 9 credits (500-level or higher) into the master’s degree from their undergraduate coursework. The first half of the clinical component of UTS allows some flexibility for candidates to take additional coursework in the fall and/or work part time. In terms of coursework, students should expect to take 1-2 courses during summer and/or winter session in order to fulfill the required 33-36 credits for the master’s degree. In the fall of the +1 year, students participate in their pre-practicum student teaching experience, and must fulfill 200 clinical hours (approximately 16 hours per week) between September and December. Prior to the spring semester (typically in mid-late January) candidates enter their student teaching practicum and then, begin coursework in February when the UMass spring semester commences. In the student teaching practicum semester, students are full time, Monday-Friday, at their student teaching placements. Normally, UTS follows the UMass academic calendar. Students can work with the pathway coordinator to identify requisite courses to take as an undergraduate, so they are best prepared to enter the +1 year..
