Academics

The Department of Architecture provides an accessible, intellectually rigorous design education that firmly grounds students in the art and science of the built environment.

The interdisciplinary, collaborative program embraces spirited, socially progressive, and environmentally responsive design. As New England’s first and only public architecture program, our faculty and students engage the region in integrated teaching, research, and outreach.

Interdisciplinary academic collaboration with landscape architecture, building and construction technology, civil engineering, studio arts, and art history, among other disciplines, have formed the program's unique focus and mission.

The Five-College Architectural Studies Program (comprised of UMass, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College, and Amherst College) provides a rich intellectual exchange for both students and faculty.
