Economics
The UMass Amherst Department of Economics is recognized worldwide for heterodox research in economics. Public and private decision-makers use research from the department to make decisions regarding climate change and sustainability; inequality and living wages; financial crisis and regulation; egalitarian and efficient development; cooperation, coordination, and competition; and on the visible and invisible significance of gender and household organization in the economy.
The undergraduate program focuses on the study of macro- and microeconomic theory, market structures, economic development, and public policy with an eye toward the development of critical thinking, data analysis, and civic engagement. The graduate program provides an opportunity for students from around the world to deepen their understanding of economics and pursue original research in the field.
