UMass Economist James Boyce’s Video Series Wins Silver at Anthem Awards

A video series exploring the economic forces behind war and peace featuring James K. Boyce, professor emeritus of economics and senior fellow at the Political Economy Research Institute, has earned a silver honor at the fifth annual Anthem Awards.
In “The Economics of War and Peace,” Boyce examines how economic incentives influence both the outbreak of conflict and the possibilities for sustaining peace. He opens with a historical survey of efforts to end wars through economic policy and later draws on his firsthand experience working in postwar El Salvador in the 1990s to explain the roles of greed and grievance in civil strife.
The project was recognized in the Education, Art & Culture category for awareness-focused shows and videos.
The seven-part series was produced by the Institute for New Economic Thinking, which seeks to give students access to unconventional economic perspectives not typically found in university curricula.
The Anthem Awards, founded by the Webby Awards in 2021, celebrate mission-driven work in areas such as education, human rights and sustainability. Winners are selected by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, who judge entries on a standard of excellence set for each category.
