The Alfonso Serrano Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT)

F. Peter Schloerb of the College of Natural Sciences's Department of Astronomy is among a number of scientists who are urging the government of Mexico to continue funding the Alfonso Serrano Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT), which is operated in a collaboration between Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica and UMass Amherst. Reporting says the telescope will run out of money on August 31 unless the government agrees to continue to help cover its operating costs. An article in Science describes the predicament:

"The LMT’s annual operating costs are 'a tiny fraction of the initial investment,' says F. Peter Schloerb, an astronomer at UMass Amherst and director of an office that helps manage the telescope. Ending funding, he adds, would be 'like building an apartment building and then you don’t bother to rent any apartments.'"
