The BS in environmental science at UMass Amherst will help you learn to critically evaluate and determine solutions to increasingly complex environmental issues on a local, regional, and global scale.

You’ll take core courses in natural sciences, math, and environmental studies. These will give you a solid foundation in all aspects of environmental problems. You’ll also work with your faculty advisor to design a unique curriculum tailored to your interests, with a focus on one of these areas:

  • Environmental quality
  • Natural systems
  • Environment and society

In this major you will also go beyond the classroom to participate in hands-on activities off campus, such as environmental site assessment (ASTM-EPA procedures), hazardous waste operations and emergency response (OSHA Certification), and environmental applications of GIS technologies.

After graduation, you’ll be ready for career opportunities in private industry and consulting firms, nongovernmental organizations, and governmental agencies. You might also pursue graduate study in areas such as hydrogeology, watershed management, soil science, ecotoxicology, education, law, and environmental engineering.
