Certificate in American English Linguistics
The linguistics department offers a 15-credit Certificate in American English Linguistics to students who complete a program of courses focused on the structure, usage, and dialects of American English. This certificate is open to anyone, matriculated and non-matriculated students, regardless of whether they have been admitted to a degree program at UMass Amherst. The requirements can be completed entirely in the classroom, or with a combination of online and classroom courses.
Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
A 15-credit Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is offered by the linguistics department, in collaboration with the ESL Program and the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. This certificate is intended to provide students with the foundation in linguistics and language teaching that they need to succeed as an English language teacher. It can serve as preparation for teaching English abroad, or for teaching outside the public school system here in the United State (it does not provide certification or licensure for teaching in the K–12 context).
Linguistics and Data Science Certificate
The Department of Linguistics currently offers a Linguistics and Data Science Certificate. This is a 5 course undergraduate certificate that provides a foundation in linguistics, quantitative methods and programming, and builds on it within the study of human language and language technology. Students develop programing skills, understanding of basic formal foundations (e.g. formal language theory and probability theory), and applications in language technology and in the study of human linguistic knowledge
Cognitive Science Certificate
A graduate certificate in cognitive science is available to PhD students in linguistics as well as other departments at UMass Amherst.
Translation and Interpreting Studies Certificates
The undergraduate certificate is open to students at UMASS Amherst and the Five Colleges with a strong command of English and intermediate-level competence in at least one other language. The certificate is invaluable for students who wish to work in local or global communities in which they might be called upon to serve as ad hoc translators or interpreters or where they need to work with translators and interpreters to meet professional aims and purposes.
Certificate in Professional Writing and Technical Communication
The professional writing and technical communication (PWTC) certificate prepares students for careers in technical and professional writing, digital communication, and user experience (UX).
