Coordinator: Magda Oiry
The 15-credit undergraduate Certificate in AI in the Humanities and Fine Arts aims to develop knowledge and skills that will enable students to effectively and responsibly use AI in a human-centered way, and to participate in critical discussion of its merits and of its shortfalls and harms. It has been tailored to students in the Humanities and Fine Arts, but is available to all undergraduates at UMass Amherst. Courses are from a range of disciplines, and the certificate offers flexibility to accommodate individual students’ interests and goals.
You can direct inquiries about the Certificate to the Linguistics Department certificate coordinator, Magda Oiry. The Certificate is directed by Joe Pater of Linguistics and Christopher White of Music and Dance. You don’t have to apply for admission for the certificate, but it would be nice for you to let us know that you intend to pursue it. Once you have completed the requirements, you must contact the certificate coordinator to arrange for the award of the certificate.
Completion of the certificate in AI in the Humanities and Fine Arts will:
- Develop students’ understanding of the history of artificial intelligence, how current models function, and how they relate to human intelligence and creativity
- Increase students’ awareness of the place of AI in society, of its current and potential impacts, both positive and negative
- Provide experience working with AI systems, and guidance on how they can be used effectively, responsibly and safely
