The University of Massachusetts Amherst has announced its Translation Center has been renamed the Edwin C. Gentzler Translation Center in honor of Edwin Gentzler, professor emeritus, a prominent scholar of translation studies and the center’s director from 1994-2014.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and reception were held at the center on Sept. 19 to celebrate the occasion. The event—attended by students, faculty, campus and college leadership, community members, Translation Center partners, and language professionals—celebrated both center’s new name as well as Gentzler’s leadership and accomplishments.

“During his time as director, Edwin established the solid foundation that supports the Translation Center today. It's a foundation that has allowed us to continue to provide all the essential language services, while expanding supports and educational opportunities within our own university community and beyond,” said Regina Galasso, director of the Gentzler Translation Center, in her remarks.

The newly renamed center commemorates Gentzler’s commitment to the benefits of language access for all. His generous gift will allow the Gentzler Translation Center to continue to create initiatives that mitigate discrimination based on language and further supports the founding principle of the center as it pertains to ensuring civil rights in the context of translation and particularly languages of limited diffusion. The gift funds will be used to develop initiatives that mitigate discrimination based on language including, but not limited to, supporting mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students, resident mentors and workshops with professionals and scholars in business, government, the arts, and nonprofit sectors.

Since 1979, the Translation Center has provided a variety of language services and educational opportunities from a public research university to a wide range of clients and partners from Massachusetts and beyond, while engaging faculty, students, and language industry professionals.
