Join the Kinney Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies for the opening reception of Apocalypse: Science & Myth, a Renaissance of the Earth Exhibit on Saturday, April 22, from 1-3 p.m.
During the event, attendees can meet artist in residence Suzette Marie Martin as she showcases new work that layers data from climate and environmental research with the Biblical tale of banishment from paradise to reveal the eco-anxieties that link the past and the present. The American Psychological Association describes eco-anxiety as “fear of environmental cataclysm from observing the seemingly irrevocable impact of climate change.” Martin’s work acknowledges the “unequivocal scientific evidence” for anthropogenic climate change, and bears witness to the consequences of intensifying ecological decline.
The Renaissance of the Earth revolutionizes what it means to think with the early modern past about our environmental future. Through a range of cross-disciplinary collaborative models, it puts students, artists, and scholars at the center of an interdisciplinary research mandate with the goal of discovering diverse avenues for creating sustainable and equitable life.
Apocalypse: Science & Myth is on display now through fall 2023. All are welcome to view the exhibit during the center’s regular hours, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free parking is available at 650 E. Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002.
