Elisa Gonzales Publishes Her New Book: Spanish Accents and Dialects for Actors

April 24, 2026 Academics

Content

Professional headshot of a woman with voluminous, dark curly hair and brown eyes, looking directly at the camera with a calm expression. She wears a black ribbed turtleneck sweater and gold hoop earrings. Her arms are crossed in front of her on a gray surface, showing a simple gold ring. The background is a soft, out-of-focus mottled gray, creating a polished and sophisticated studio atmosphere.

Elisa Gonzales, Undergraduate Program Director and Assistant Professor of Voice and Acting published her book Spanish Accents and Dialects for Actors with Routledge this month. She co-authoring this project with Professor Adriano Cabral (University of Nevada, Reno) and Professor Josh F.S. Moser (Kean University).

Book cover for "Spanish Accents and Dialects for Actors, Volume 1: North America and the Caribbean" by Elisa Gonzales, Josh F.S. Moser, and Adi Cabral, published by Routledge. The background features an abstract mosaic pattern of square and rectangular tiles in gradient shades of green, yellow, orange, red, purple, and blue. The title and author information are prominently displayed in white text on a solid, dark purple rectangular block centered at the bottom.

This groundbreaking guide, written in both English and Spanish, is the first of its kind designed specifically for Latine actors, addressing a long-standing gap in performance resources. In this book, Gonzales and Moser explain how Spanish-speaking accents have been oversimplified or stereotyped on stage and screen. Their writing offers a more nuanced and authentic approach for actors, as well as for directors, coaches, and educators. The research behind this work was generously supported by the UMass FRG Grant.
