Based in the linguistics department, the graduate certificate in cognitive science incorporates classes from communication disorders, computer science, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology, offering students an opportunity to identify new questions in the field and approach them in novel way.

The mission of the cognitive science certificate program is to promote such exploration in a self-designed, flexible but coherent program that draws on the unique strengths of the resources at UMass Amherst and the individual interests and talents of particular students. The certificate program encourages graduate students to study outside the bounds of their home department and recognizes the achievements of those who do so.
