The art education program at UMass Amherst prepares inventive, passionate, and collaborative art educators who inspire creativity in their students. Through a combination of studio art, art history, and education courses, as well as field experiences, students undertake a critical examination of art education as they develop skills in teaching, visual arts, and research. Our students are committed to teaching art in public elementary and secondary schools, as well as continuing their own creative and research efforts and their own learning in the visual arts. The program is situated in the art department and has strong cooperative relationships with the College of Education and the history of art and architecture department. Both the undergraduate and graduate programs prepare students to apply for a teaching license in the state of Massachusetts.
