About

Andrea is an applied linguist with interests in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Second Language Reading and Writing, and Psycholinguistics. She completed her M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Florida and her M.Ed. in International Teaching from Framingham State College. Her B.A., from Florida International University, is in English with a certificate in Linguistics.

Prior to joining UMass Amherst, Andrea taught English for academic purposes (EAP) at an engineering college, the Petroleum Institute, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; EAP at the University of Florida's English Language Institute; English for specific purposes in the Academic Spoken English program at the University of Florida; and English as a foreign language in Sosnowiec, Poland. In addition, she was also an assistant professor in the English Language and Linguistics Program at the University of Arizona, where she taught applied linguistics courses to graduate students.

Her pedagogical approach is informed by cognitive principles of language learning, individual differences, and task-based/project-based language teaching. Her most recent publications have focused on issues that arise from the classroom and curriculum development. Her current research interests include L2 reading and writing and positive psychology applications in the context of the L2 classroom and student advising.
