Isabella Klink is an incoming junior legal studies major and sat down to discuss her summer adventures!
What are you doing this summer?
This summer, I’m taking a summer course at UMass which has been really fun. I am also preparing to start the SBS in DC program in the fall. I’ve been applying to some fall internships, and I got one recently!
Currently, I'm taking Social Psychology 360. That started last week and it’s actually really interesting, more interesting than I thought it would be. I'm trying to hopefully get a minor in psychology done by the time I graduate.
I am very interested in psychology, and I think it pairs well with my major. I'm hopefully going to law school, and I think that that's something that complements well to these plans.
What are you looking forward to in the SBS in DC program? How did you get involved?
I'm going to be interning at a law office in DC in the fall. I'm going to be a legal assistant, meaning that I help the firm when they go into the jails, interviewing people going to court, helping file paperwork – I’m very excited.
When I applied to UMass and I was going through the whole orientation process, the Legal Studies Department brought up the SBS in DC program and immediately I knew that was something I was interested in. Then over winter break this past year, they sent out some information about the application. I went on handshake and saw it, then I decided to give it a try. I applied and from there, they emailed me. When spring semester started, they asked for an interview, and I got into the program which was really exciting. I think there's like 10 or 15 of us and then we all go to DC for the fall semester, we live in an apartment, we all partake in different internships geared towards what we want to do in the future.
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
During my internship, I'm hoping to gain a little bit more insight into what sector of law I want to go into and what that hands-on work looks like. It's not something I've been exposed to, so being able to gain that professional experience that I haven't had yet is something that I'm really looking forward to.
What are you doing to relax over the summer?
My family owns a boat, and we live in Buffalo, New York. We go out on the lake a lot. It's been really fun, it’s something we do a lot. We just got a jet ski, so I’ve been learning how to jet ski. That's mainly what I've been doing.
