Prioritizing self-care during the semester is important for maintaining your social, emotional, and physical well-being, which is key to finding success at UMass. There are plenty of ways to focus on self-care while at school, but in this article, I'll detail a few of the ways you can focus on yourself while on campus.

Staying active whenever you can
Going to UMass RecWell is a great way to practice self-care, whether you enjoy lifting weights or attending an instructor-led class—both are great ways to get your body moving. Another way to stay active that I love is simply walking around campus during your free time. When the weather is nice, taking walking breaks during the day can be beneficial for your mental and physical health.
I have found that when I take brief walking breaks I can be more productive afterwards.
Digital Detox

Making time to disconnect from your phone, tablets, and computers is a great way to step away from a hectic schedule. Oftentimes, college students spend the majority of their day working on their computers, so consciously taking screen breaks can be a great habit to start. If you feel you need assistance with taking a break from technology, UMass hosts an event called Chapel Unplugged, which invites students to hang out and relax without the distraction of technology. It also offers crafts and other activities.
Take the UMass Positivity and Relaxation 1-credit class
Every semester, the university offers the 1-credit class, Positivity & Relaxation Training (PART): UNIV 100. The course teaches participants a variety of mind-body practices and self-care interventions that encourage healthy self-care routines and lifestyles. You can find this class listed on SPIRE.
Set a sleep schedule
Getting enough sleep is essential for college students, who often juggle classes, sports, and extracurricular activities. Sticking to a consistent bedtime can be challenging, but holding yourself accountable for going to bed early is a great way to ensure you get enough rest. Remember—being well-rested helps you stay focused and productive throughout the day!

Do something fun!
It’s easy to forget that college isn’t all work and no play. While it is important to stay focused on your studies and extracurriculars, doing something fun is a great way to practice self-care. Amherst and its surrounding towns are full of fun things to do, no matter what your definition of fun is! From bowling and roller skating to visiting a local museum, there is something for everyone. Be sure to check out our past series, “Best of Western Mass” to read about all the area has to offer.
Prioritizing self-care is something we hope you have the chance to do this semester and every semester to follow. If you practice self-care on campus, feel free to let us know any tips you have that have helped you!
