Pizza and Prof: Passion, Research & Real Talk as a Black Woman Navigating Academia
Meet Professor Yolanda Covington-Ward

Pizza & Prof Night is back! All are welcome!
Grab a slice and pull up a chair—it’s your chance to network and chat with a professor in a relaxed, friendly setting. Each Pizza & Prof event brings together Honors College students and faculty for great conversation, fresh ideas, and (of course) pizza!
This fall, join us for an engaging discussion with Dr. Yolanda Covington-Ward, chair and professor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies.
Covington-Ward will share her journey to academia as a first-generation college student and her experiences navigating higher education as a Black woman. Learn about her research focusing on embodiment, identity, religion, performance, and politics of people of African descent, and gain insights that might inspire your own academic path!
Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about her research and personal experiences in a field where representation matters. As Dr. Covington-Ward notes, seeing someone who looks like you in a leadership position "opens up different possibilities in terms of what you can imagine for yourself."
Come hungry for both pizza and thought-provoking conversation!
Pizza & Prof Night is made possible by generous donations from parents, friends, and alumni of Commonwealth Honors College.
