How did you find a sense of community and belonging at CHC and UMass? What experiences or resources helped you feel connected and supported?
Throughout my time at UMass, I have had the privilege of participating in various interests and passions, paving the way to finding my sense of community. I have had the opportunity to participate in many aspects of what UMass offers, from intramural badminton to a community forum dedicated to Hispanic engineers. I found my sense of belonging at UMass with the support and guidance of the Emerging Scholars Rap, which is dedicated to fostering underrepresented students and from students to faculty. It gave me the confidence to participate in leadership and research roles, allowing me to make close connections that truly have made a world of difference in my experience here at UMass. I truly appreciate the year of growth while I've been while attending here, and I can’t wait for what's to come!
What advice would you give to incoming students?
College is your years for growing and finding your identity, and my biggest advice is to stick true to what you value while keeping an open mind, you will have the chance to try so many different things from all aspects of life. Don't fear the word yes, go outside your comfort zone. I made my closest friends by simply finding the courage to say hello. I applied to positions outside my major, where I've learned many new perspectives and discovered new opportunities I would've never imagined for myself. There are people here who are dedicated to supporting you as a student, so never be afraid to reach out if you're overwhelmed. It's a big school, but the community you choose to be a part of makes that foundation of connection and understanding; it's truly an experience that I am proud to be able to say I am part of UMass. Time passes so quickly, but you make so many memories. It's a big journey as you navigate college life, but take some chances to explore, and don't be afraid to make mistakes as you pursue your dreams!
