Student Spotlight: Ella McDuffie, BA ‘26
Ella McDuffie is an Early Childhood Education major whose work focuses on supporting young learners while building community among future educators. Through her student teaching placements with children ages three to seven, Ella has gained hands-on classroom experience while developing her approach to inclusive and supportive teaching. In addition to her work in the classroom, she serves as the president of VIBE (Visibility Initiative for BIPOC Educators), where she has helped create and grow a space for connection and belonging within the College of Education.
What has your experience been like with student teaching and your involvement in VIBE?
I have student taught in both the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters with students ages 3–7. These experiences have helped me grow as an educator and build confidence in the classroom. I became involved with VIBE last year and have served as both a member and president. Helping grow the organization from the ground up has been a meaningful experience and has had a positive impact on the College of Education and the broader UMass community.
Why is this work important to you?
Through student teaching, I have gained experience in classroom and behavior management, subject knowledge, and what it means to be a professional in a school setting. VIBE has been especially meaningful because it creates a space for BIPOC future educators to connect. I wish I had had a space like this when I first came to campus, and I hope other students are able to find a sense of belonging through VIBE.
What are your plans after graduation? What impact do you hope to make in the field of education?
I will be working in the Greater Boston area as a full-time early childhood teacher for children with moderate disabilities. In my classroom, I hope to create an environment where students feel accepted, safe, and motivated to learn. My goal is to help prepare my students for the real world while making sure they feel supported every step of the way.
