Student Spotlight: Anthony Pizzano, EdS ‘27
Anthony Pizzano is a graduate student in the School Counseling program whose work focuses on building supportive environments for middle and high school students. At Amherst High School, Anthony serves as the Assistant Director of the Morning Movement and Mentoring Program, a before-school initiative that creates a welcoming space for students in grades 7–12 to start their day.
What Inspired You To Pursue A Career In Education?
I was inspired to become a school counselor by my high school football coach and counselor, Chris Evans. He was always there for his students and players, helping them achieve their goals. For me, there were times—both on and off the field—when things were not going well, and Coach Evans was there to help guide me through it. He may not fully realize the impact he had on me, but he helped me see that becoming a school counselor was the path for me.
What Is The Morning Movement And Mentoring Program And What Inspired This Work?
It is a before-school program for students in grades 7–12 at Amherst High School, run by staff from across the community who come in early to help students start their day in a positive way. Activities range from circle groups and large-group dialogues to student-versus-staff basketball games, or poster design sessions for UMass Women’s Basketball games. Students from all backgrounds come together in this space—some need a place to go in the morning while their parents are working, and others want to connect with friends or use the weight room.
Why Is This Work Important To You Personally Or Professionally?
I see myself in many of these students—I remember wanting simple opportunities like shooting basketball or spending time in the weight room with friends. Also, this program gives students the chance to connect with adults in a different and more informal way, building strong relationships and meaningful support systems. For me, the goal is to help the next generation grow into confident, respectful, and inspiring individuals who feel supported as they pursue their goals.
