Who can participate in the program?

Students may apply to the program in their sophomore, junior, or senior year with a declared major and a 2.5 cumulative UMass GPA or higher. First year students may apply to the program as long as they have 32 credits prior to participation with at least 12 credits earned at UMass.  

How do I apply?

Students apply to the program via the Semester in the City application. The application is straightforward and designed to be completed within 20 minutes.

Interested students in the program should contact the Education Advising Center prior to applying.

What is the deadline for applying?

The deadline to apply for Spring Semester is November 1.

The deadline to apply for Fall semester is April 1. 

What is the cost?

The program costs the same as one semester at UMass. You continue paying your standard tuition and mandatory fees. There are no special fees. Financial aid will continue to come from UMass.

Change Maker Award

The Change Maker Award helps supports students who are passionate, empathetic, and interested in making a change in the world.  Awards range from $500 - $2,000. Learn how to be nominated.

Where will I live?

Fellows will live together in Allston, a neighborhood in Boston with a large student and young professional population, near Boston University and Boston College. Each apartment building will have a Resident Advisor who will organize community activities and occasional field trips for fellows. A Resident Director will be on call 24/7 and is responsible for oversight and management of the residences.

Program benefits

You will receive a $595 stipend for the semester as well as an MBTA card with a balance of $360 for you to access transportation and explore all the diverse neighborhoods that Boston has to offer! We also provide food reimbursement for up to $380.
