Our community is also committed to challenging inequities in STEM education. Recognizing that certain social groups have been historically marginalized from STEM disciplines, education, and work, faculty and students actively work to understand and dismantle the processes and structures contributing to their systematic exclusion.

Degrees

Math, Science, & Learning Technologies doctoral students engage in intensive scholarly work while also working closely with practitioners in both formal and informal learning settings. We put a premium on developing principled approaches to affect educational practice and pursuing rigorous theory building about educational phenomena in order to develop state-of-the-art instructional designs. Students develop expertise in their specific content area, teaching, research and scholarship that reflects critical examination of past and current theories and work, an engagement in new inquiry, and an active involvement in the ongoing work of mathematics education, science education and learning technology. While moving through the program, Ph.D. students engage in a variety of professional and scholarly activities: building teaching and research experience, submitting papers for publication, and attending and presenting at national conferences.

The Learning, Media, & Technology master’s program prepares students to understand, critique, design, and improve technology- and media-based learning and teaching. Our students develop a thorough knowledge of learning and instruction theories, as well as theories of the design and use of educational technologies and media. They also explore the educational uses and design of a variety of technologies (e.g., robotics systems, computational media, 3D printing, social media, multimedia, and open online courses). Recent graduates have gone on to positions in K-12, community college, university, organization, and corporate settings as educational media and online learning developers, instructional designers, higher education technology leadership (e.g., Director of Online Teaching & Learning), and technology integration specialists.
