Elementary Teacher Education 4+1 Accelerated MEd

The CTEP/Elementary 4+1 Pathway is for UMass undergraduate students who know they want to become an elementary school teacher in Massachusetts.  This option allows UMass Juniors who have completed or are working to complete the prerequisite coursework to apply for graduate school early and complete up to 9 credits of coursework toward their master's degree as an undergraduate.

Ideal CTEP/Elementary 4+1 candidates are social justice-oriented with strong interpersonal and communication skills, a passion for public education, and experience with children in educational environments.  Students must have a proven record of academic success with a GPA of 3.0 to be considered.

The CTEP/Elementary Education 4+1 application is now open.  The deadline to apply is January 19, 2026.

The Collaborative Teacher Education Pathway (CTEP) is an ideal program for prospective teachers who want to quickly earn a master's degree and license.

Licensure

All Educator Licensure programs at the University of Massachusetts Amherst are approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Second Education to meet licensure requirements in the state of Massachusetts ONLY.   It is not determined whether the programs meet any other state's requirements.

Many US states are signatories to the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement which facilitates the mobility of educators among the states that are members of NASDTEC. This agreement makes it possible for an educator who completed an approved program and/or who holds a certificate or license in one jurisdiction to earn a certificate or license in another state or jurisdiction, with possible additional requirements.
