About

Shane Hammond is a practitioner and scholar in higher education with three decades of experience in administration and leadership, including Student Affairs, public policy, strategic planning and the application of student centered, high impact retention and completion practices. His scholarly interests include promoting access to higher education for historically marginalized student populations nationally and internationally.

As the Associate Dean for Student Success and Senior Lecturer in Higher Education at the University of Massachusetts College of Education, Shane continues his work in both administration and teaching. His teaching includes courses in Student Affairs practice, student development theory, community college leadership and higher education foundations for the Department of Education Policy, Research and Administration.

Shane's commitment to access and opportunity can be seen in both his professional work and civic engagement.  He is a past member of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts Education Board, offering thousands of dollars in scholarships to students across Western Massachusetts, and served two terms as a member of the Board of Directors for Safe Passage, a local organization committed to supporting survivors of domestic violence and their families.

Shane's empirical research of student veterans in higher education has been nationally recognized and published in peer reviewed academic journals and online forums. He currently serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Veterans’ Studies.
