About

Patricia Fuentes Acevedo is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Mathematics Education in the College of Education.

Patricia is committed to transforming mathematics education in underserved communities in the US and globally. Her research focuses on two interrelated strands: mathematics teacher noticing for equity and equitable collaborations for family mathematics. As a math teacher educator and community-engaged scholar, Patricia explores how to better support pre-service and in-service teacher learning in ways that acknowledge their expertise and center the cultural wealth of their students and families. She takes a Research-Practice Partnership approach and employs co-design methods to collaborate with nondominant communities to achieve equitable and sustainable transformation. Her work has been funded through the grant Mentoring for Junior Researchers of Color sponsored by the William T. Grant Foundation, the Next Generation of Family Math Researchers fellowship by the Center for Family Math, and the UC Irvine School of Education.Dr. Fuentes Acevedo obtained a Ph.D. in Education with specialization in Teaching, Learning, and Educational Improvement from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). She holds a degree in Mathematics Teaching and a Master's degree in Didactics of Mathematics from the Universidad de Concepción, Chile, as well as a Master's degree in Education from UC Irvine. She has taught mathematics at the middle school, high school, and technical-professional levels. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked as a lecturer at the Faculty of Education of the Universidad de Concepción, Chile, for three years.
