Jonique R. Childs is an assistant professor in the School Counselor Education program. She has completed her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Iowa. Additionally, she has completed a graduate minor in Multicultural Education & Cultural Competency and is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). Jonique has also completed dual Masters degrees MS.Eds in school and clinical mental health counseling with an emphasis in career development. Dr. Childs has previous experiences as an at-risk school counselor, college career counselor and recruiter, and clinical mental health counselor on the national suicide prevention hotline. She has served various individuals from different ethnic backgrounds to include adolescent, high school students, undergraduates, graduate students, and older adults.

Dr. Child's research investigates the psychosocial needs of students of color that also identify as First-Generation in K-12 and post-secondary education. Her research seeks to systematically examine the personal, social, emotional, academic, and career attainment of post-secondary education of first-generation college students of color and the interconnectedness of mental well-being with an emphasis in help seeking behaviors and attitudes for personal counseling and career services. Jonique's research areas of interest include first-generation college students, student of color, career development, postsecondary education, multicultural education, cultural competency, social justice advocacy practices, leadership characteristics, and mental health awareness.
