Study Abroad

The Japanese Program strongly encourages students to take advantage of the excellent study abroad opportunities offered through the Education Abroad office within the University's Office of Global Affairs

Qualified UMass students can pursue language and cultural immersion by studying at partner universities in Japan. Current exchange agreements exist with the following institutions:

  • Hokkaidō University (Sapporo, Hokkaidō)
  • Sophia (Jōchi) University (Tokyo)
  • International Christian University (Tokyo)
  • Nanzan University in Nagoya (Nagoya, Aichi)
  • Kansai Gaidai University (Hirakata, Osaka)
  • Kwansei Gakuin University (Nishinomiya, Hyogo)

In addition, UMass students may choose from a variety of other partner programs.

To support students in the process, Japanese 291S “Preparing for Study Abroad” (1 credit, offered in the fall) helps participants explore program options, navigate the application process, and prepare for their study abroad experience.

The Office of Global Affairs also hosts area-specific information sessions each October and November for students considering study abroad. These sessions, which feature departmental faculty, returned study-abroad students, and Education Abroad staff, cover all aspects of the experience in an open forum. Refreshments are provided, and all interested students are welcome to attend.
