The Japanese Language Lounge offers students of Japanese a welcoming space to practice conversation with native or near-native speakers. It’s a relaxed, supportive environment where you can strengthen your speaking skills, build confidence, and deepen your understanding of Japanese language and culture.

What We Offer

  • Conversation Practice: Engage in real-life conversations with native or near-native Japanese speakers.
  • Cultural Exchange: Learn about Japanese customs, traditions, and daily life directly from those who live it.
  • Community Building: Meet fellow students and create a supportive network of language learners.
  • Guidance on Class-related Questions: While the Lounge is an excellent resource for conversation and cultural exchange, please consult your TAs for detailed help with class assignments or specific course content.

Herter Hall, 4th floor elevator lobby — a central, comfortable spot for language practice.

Who Can Join?
The Lounge is primarily intended for students currently enrolled in Japanese classes at UMass, but all are welcome. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced learner, you’ll find both value and camaraderie here.

Schedule
The Lounge is typically open every afternoon. Exact times vary each semester depending on the availability of Japanese-speaking helpers. Please check the updated schedule at the start of each semester.
