Whitney Battle-Baptiste, anthropology, represented the W. E. B. Du Bois Center and UMass Libraries at the 60th anniversary celebration of the passing of W. E. B. Du Bois in Accra, Ghana. W. E. B. Du Bois passed away on August 27, 1963, the eve of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

In addition to the celebration, a symposium featured scholars including David Levering Lewis (NYU), Aldon Morris (Northwestern University), Karsheik Sims-Alvarado (Morehouse College), Akosua K. Darkwah (University of Ghana), Jeffery Peck (great-grandson of W. E. B. Du Bois), and Lanisa Kitchiner (Chief of the African & Middle Eastern division, Library of Congress). The program was sponsored by the W. E. B. Du Bois Museum Foundation.

The visit also included an audience with President H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to emphasize the importance of preserving the legacy of Du Bois to the country of Ghana and the larger African Diaspora.
