At UMass Amherst, the journalism major is based on the premise that journalists are essential in a democratic society because they inform its citizens, give voice to the voiceless, and hold the powerful accountable.
Beyond your core courses in newswriting, reporting, and ethics, you can tailor your degree to your professional and personal interests. Choose from concentrations in public relations, sports journalism, or broadcast journalism.
You’ll gain real-world experience to prepare you for your career through study abroad and internship opportunities—approximately 80% of journalism majors complete at least one internship at sites like The Onion, The Daily Show, The Today Show, New England Sports News, and local and regional media outlets.
You’ll work with distinguished faculty, including winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the Freedom Forum Journalism Teacher of the Year Award.
