Office of Post-Award Management (OPAM)

 

The Office of Post-Award Management (OPAM) advances the university’s research mission by supporting extramural funding, providing leadership and expertise in research administration, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. OPAM is responsible for reviewing, interpreting, negotiating, and executing awards on behalf of the university. OPAM is responsible for stewarding sponsored funding in accordance with regulatory requirements for projects funded by federal, state, and local government agencies, foundations, foreign entities, and other public and private sources. OPAM also prepares, negotiates, and issues all sub-awards for collaborative research.

The mission of the Office of Post Award Management (OPAM) is to promote and contribute to the university’s research enterprise by providing subject matter expertise and engaging advance technology in the management and administration of award services. As a customer service-oriented unit, our goal is to create activities that represent our commitment to excellence in award execution and further the advancement of research engagement. Our objective is to provide high quality, efficient, customer-focused service and support by using and developing tools that facilitate award processes and continue to build on the foundation and success of research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  

Negotiation of Terms and Conditions: We ensure that the terms and conditions of university research agreements align with federal law, state law, and university policy. Through meticulous review and negotiation, our aim is to safeguard the interests of both project personnel and the university.

Authorized Organizational Representative: We serve as the designated university signing authority for Federal, State, Non-Profit, and non-industry Extramural Funding agreements.

Advisory Services: We provide guidance and support to Principal Investigators (PIs) and project personnel regarding their obligations under the terms and conditions of the associated agreement.

Sponsor Liaison: We facilitate communication between stakeholders throughout the award lifecycle.

Training and Outreach: Our specialists provide ongoing workshops to empower and assist stakeholders in effectively navigating the complexities of research funding.

 

Office hours are held each Thursday from 1:30 -  2:30 p.m. via Zoom. All are welcome to drop in with any questions. OPAM Research Administrators are also always available via email, phone, or zoom outside of these shared hours.
