Paul Catanzaro, extension professor in the College of Natural Sciences’s Department of Environmental Conservation, recently received the 2024 Technology Transfer Award from the Society of American Foresters (SAF), a leading scientific and professional society for the field of forestry.

Through this award, SAF recognizes “outstanding achievement in technology transfer, implementation, and extension as evidenced in the recipient's career or involvement in SAF Working Group and science program activities. Technology transfer is critical to assuring that sound technical information becomes available to those concerned with the management and conservation of forest resources."

Specifically, SAF is highlighting Catanzaro’s work to integrate research and outreach to family forest owners. The goal of his integrated approach is to learn about family forest owners in order to better inform their decisions. A main focus of this work is to help landowners decide the future of their land through conservation-based estate planning. He is also interested in the application of ecological forestry across multi-owner landscapes to restore and sustain forests.

Dr. Paige Warren, professor and department head of the Department of Environmental Conservation, spoke to Catanzaro’s impact throughout the Commonwealth: “I am so pleased to see this recognition of Professor Catanzaro’s decades of successful and innovative programs, translating science to action and supporting private landowners in conserving and managing forests across Massachusetts.”
