Ela Gezen, associate professor of German, has been invited to give three research presentations based on her current book project, "Cultures in Migration: Turkish Artistic Practices and Interventions in West Berlin."
On April 13, Gezen presented “Aras Ören, the Archive of Migration and Traditions of Tomorrow” at a conference held in honor of Leslie A. Adelson at Cornell University.
On May 3, Gezen will give a talk “Turkish Theater in Migration" as part of the conference "Arriving in the Present: A Critical Lexicon for Multilingualism and (Post-)Migration in Contemporary German Studies" at Princeton University.
Gezen will also give an invited lecture called "Kulturen in der Migration: Türkeistämmige Künstler*innen in Westberlin" at the Hochschule Bielefeld – University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Germany on June 3, 2024.
Her book project, “Cultures in Migration: Turkish Artistic Practices and Interventions in West Berlin,” examines cultural practices by Turkish artists during the late 1970s and early 1980s as an early manifestation of Turkish self-presentation in West Germany. Moreover, it engages with the question of how we may relate cultural activities in the early phase of Turkish migration to cultural practices today in order to discern their cultural-political legacies in the way they might have inflected postmigrant frameworks and contemporary cultural interventions.
