Senior dance and sociology major and Commonwealth Honors College student Caroline Ball '25 (she/they) has tackled re-staging the traditional ballet Carmen Suite as her creative portfolio for her Honors Senior Thesis. The performances will take place Nov. 7-9 in the Totman Performance Lab. House opens at 7 p.m., show will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free. RSVP here.
Carmen Suite is a thrilling new production of the classic opera and ballet, with a queer take on the traditional characters and storyline. Drama and mystery are at the center of this production.
Ball is interested in the gender disparity within the ballet industry and wanted to re-stage a ballet to be as inclusive as ballet could be. With gender blind casting and incorporating aspects of drag into the show, they are challenging the traditional ballet gender norms with many aspects of their artistic vision. Over two semesters of research they have finally finished the choreography and is showcasing her work with a fully independent production this November.
