About

Sayed Ahmad Javid Mussawy is a Senior lecturer in the Department of Education Policy, Research, and Administration (EPRA) and serves as the Director of Educational Assessment and Analytics at the College of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst. With nearly 20 years of experience in higher education, Javid combines academic leadership with a strong passion for improving institutional effectiveness and advancing student success through evidence-based assessment and research.

Javid began his academic career at Baghlan University, where he taught and served as Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 2010 to 2015. He has taught at Kabul Education University, Hakeem Sanaye University and has collaborated with organizations such as the Agha Khan Foundation, German Agency for International Development (GIZ), and the Public Health Directorate of Baghlan.

His research explores global and international perspectives on educational assessment and evaluation, policy implementation analysis, and quality assurance and accreditation in (higher) education. Specifically, he is interested in how educational policies are borrowed and adapted across contexts and the implications for policy and practice.

During his tenure at Baghlan University, Javid contributed to several development projects focused on education, agriculture, human rights, and women’s empowerment. He served as the Principal Investigator (PI) for a two-year Access Microscholarship Program funded by the U.S. Department of State, which provided over 200 youths with the opportunity to acquire English language skills up to an intermediate level.

Currently, he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses such as Introduction to International Education, Project Management and Implementation in International Development, Monitoring and Evaluation, Educational Research, and Assessment, Evaluation, and Research in Higher Education.

Beyond academia, Javid contributes to the community, serving as a board member with Amherst Community Land Trust (ACLT), the Literacy Project (TLP) in Western Massachusetts, and a community gardening circle in Amherst, MA.
