Concerned About a Friend?
It can be hard to know what to do when you are worried about someone. Here are some steps that can help.
- Stay with them if you believe they may be in danger. Do not leave them alone.
- Listen without judgment. You do not need to have answers. Just being present matters.
- Encourage them to reach out to CCPH or call the 24/7 crisis line together: (413) 545-HELP (4357)
- If they are in immediate danger, call 911.

What to Expect When You Reach Out
Reaching out during a crisis takes courage. Here is what happens when you contact us.
When you call our main number or walk in, our front desk staff will connect you with a counselor as quickly as possible. If you call our crisis number, you'll be connected directly with a crisis clinician. Your counselor will listen, help you feel safer, and work with you on next steps. If needed, they will help you create a safety plan and connect you with follow-up care.
You do not need to have an existing CCPH appointment to access crisis support. Crisis services are available to all currently enrolled UMass Amherst students.
After a crisis visit, a CCPH counselor will follow up with you to make sure you are connected with ongoing support if that is the right fit.
CCPH uses a model of brief and intermittent support. If long-term or more frequent care is the right fit for you, we will work with you to find a community provider who can offer that.
