Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training

CCPH offers free Suicide Prevention gatekeeper trainings for the UMass Amherst campus community. The training teaches participants to recognize warning signs of suicide and to take action when they see them.

About the Training

The gatekeeper training model focuses on preparing those who most directly interact with students to recognize and respond to signs of distress. Through experiential exercises, participants practice the emotional and conversational skills needed to support someone in crisis and connect them with professional help.

Topics Covered

  • Warning signs of suicide
  • Common myths about suicide
  • How to respond to someone in crisis
  • Campus and community resources
  • Current suicide statistics and research
Important: Trained gatekeepers do not provide mental health care. The training equips participants to offer support, share resources, and help connect students in distress with professional services.
Why this training matters: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among college students. Research indicates a significant proportion of college students experience suicidal thoughts each year. Even one death is one too many. Training makes a difference.
