The 2023 UMass ADVANCE Faculty Peer Mentor Award in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences has been awarded to Amanda Walker Johnson, anthropology, for her outstanding leadership and special contributions in developing infrastructure in her department that led to effective group mentoring approaches to anti-racist theory and practice. She generously convened and facilitated a weekly anti-racism reading group, sharing her syllabus and creating a discussion community that became a valued co-mentoring space attended by faculty, students, and alumni of the department of Anthropology. Having this space for building community and reflection became even more meaningful to participants during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Walker Johnson’s work has filtered up to the college level, informing The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences DEI efforts and is included among resources posted on the college webpage and circulated to all SBS departments.

Congratulations, Professor Walker Johnson!
