Shanthie D'Souza Pens Analysis on Women's Rights Under the Taliban

March 26, 2024 Research

Content

Shanthie M. D'Souza, the Fulbright Nehru Visiting Chair in Public Policy, has written a new analysis for the Middle East Institute as part of their Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance Initiative. "Women's rights under the Taliban: The socio-economic consequences of political exclusion" explores the loss of women's rights in Afghanistan with the rise of Taliban control, despite the organization vowing to protect the rights of all citizens. D'Souza writes, "The Taliban's recapture of Kabul and its quick imposition of policies restricting women's access to education and employment were a catastrophic reversal of that slow, yet unidirectional movement toward women's empowerment and economic self-sufficiency."
